Double Materiality is the mandatory starting point for CSRD/ESRS reporting. A topic is considered material if it meets criteria from either the Impact perspective (inside-out) your company's effects on people and environment, or the Financial perspective (outside-in) how ESG issues affect your cash flow, growth, or cost of capital. Unlike traditional materiality, it captures both directions of risk and opportunity.

Current (actual) impacts are measured by severity alone the harm that's already occurring. Potential impacts are measured by severity × likelihood accounting for both how bad it could be and how likely it is to happen. This distinction is critical for prioritizing which topics require immediate action versus monitoring.

Impact Materiality focuses on your company's actual or potential impacts on people and the environment (e.g., labor practices in your supply chain, carbon emissions). Financial Materiality focuses on ESG-related risks and opportunities that could affect your company's financial position (e.g., carbon taxes affecting revenue, climate-related asset impairment). Both use different scoring criteria: Impacts are scored on Severity (Scale, Scope, Irremediability) and Likelihood, while Financial materiality is scored on Magnitude of effect and Likelihood.

Impact materiality in ESRS is identical to the GRI 2021 standard, making your assessment directly usable for GRI reporting. Financial materiality in ESRS aligns with IFRS (ISSB) S1 definition, focusing on 'decision-usefulness' for investors.
