What is CBAM?
Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
CBAM, or Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, is a policy tool designed to address carbon leakage by imposing a carbon price on imported goods based on their carbon content. It aims to ensure that domestic industries remain competitive while incentivizing global emission reductions.
CBAM will initially apply to particular products within the most carbon-intensive industries, such as iron and steel, cement, fertilizers, aluminum, electricity, and hydrogen. It will also include some precursors and a limited number of downstream products.
For cement and fertilizers, only indirect emissions will be considered. From October 1, 2023, until December 31, 2025, the transitional phase of CBAM will only require quarterly reports on the greenhouse gas emissions of specific products imported into the EU, covering both direct and indirect emissions. However, from 2026 onwards, the purchase of CBAM certificates will be mandatory to cover GHG emissions, with the cost of these certificates linked to carbon prices under the EU ETS. CBAM will result in an additional cost for exporting to the EU market, which will be shared between the
exporter or producer and could impact their marketing strategies.
It is expected that other countries may also adopt policies similar to CBAM.
What have we planned for you?
As the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) becomes increasingly relevant in the global discourse on climate policy, it's imperative for businesses and stakeholders to understand its intricacies and implications. To facilitate this understanding, we are excited to present a two days workshop focused on CBAM implementation, registration, and reporting.
Our workshops aim to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical insights into navigating the CBAM landscape effectively. Whether you're a company looking to comply with CBAM requirements or a consultant seeking to advise clients on CBAM-related matters, our workshops are designed to equip you with the necessary tools and knowledge.
1
Simplification and Operational Enhancements
-
Streamlined reporting Reduced complexity for compliance and authorization Updates to the “de minimis” threshold (minimum threshold for CBAM obligations)
-
These measures aim to ease the reporting burden on importers while maintaining environmental integrity.
2
Scope Expansion on the Horizon
European Commission is expected to propose an expansion of CBAM’s scope to include:

3
Scope Expansion Proposal
-
The EU will issue- A Communication on carbon leakage for exports
-
A legislative proposal to expand CBAM coverage and introduce anti-circumvention measures
4
Start of the Definitive Phase
From January 2026, the definitive phase begins, marking a crucial shift in enforcement and financial obligations for importers of carbon-intensive goods into the EU.
