1. Climate Milestone Achieved:

Emission Intensity Leadership: Ambuja Cements is among the lowest emission intensity cement producers globally, with current emissions of 537 kg CO2 per tonne of cementitious material in FY 2024-25, targeting 440 kg/tonne by 2030.

Ambuja Cements is also the first cement manufacturer globally to join the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization (AFID), led by the @International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and is a member of WEF’s Transitioning Industrial Clusters initiative.

2. SBTi Targets & Temperature Alignments:

  • Net-Zero Target: Achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the value chain by FY2050.

  • Near-Term (by FY2030, from FY2023 base): Cut scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 18.6% per ton cement. Within that: Scope 1 reduce by 16.4% , Scope 2 reduce by 53.2% , Reduce scope 3 emissions from purchased clinker/cement 35.7% per ton.

  • Long-Term (by FY2050, from FY2023 base): Cut scope 1 and 2 emissions 94% per ton cement, Cut all other absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions 90% ,Reduce scope 3 from purchased clinker/cement 97% per ton, Cut all other absolute scope 3 emissions 90%.

Temperature Alignment: based on Scope 1 and 2 - 1.5°C (as validated by SBTi)

3. Science-Based Practices adopted by Ambuja Cements

  • Leveraging advanced technologies to enhance energy efficiency and reduce energy consumption across its operations.

  • Transitioning to renewable energy sources to power its plants and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

  • Implementing energy saving strategies to optimise energy usage and minimise waste.

  • Investing in waste heat recovery systems (WHRS) to generate clean energy and reduce environmental footprint.

  • Exploring alternative fuels and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels to minimise its carbon impact.

  • Sourcing materials from sustainable and environmentally responsible suppliers to minimise the environmental impact of raw material extraction and processing.

  •  Reducing clinker factor in cement products and increasing the proportion of green products in portfolio.

Sustainability highlights

  • As part of its decarbonisation strategy, Ambuja aims to source 60% of its power from renewable and green sources by the financial year 2028. This includes plans for 1 gigawatt of solar and wind capacity and 376 megawatts of waste heat recovery systems. So far, it has installed 299 megawatts of renewable capacity and 186 megawatts of waste heat recovery capacity.

  • Over 85% of Ambuja's production consists of blended cement, significantly reducing carbon footprint compared to ordinary Portland cement. Their products are GRIHA-certified, contributing to sustainable construction practices

  • Ambuja Kawach that has 30% lower carbon footprint as compared to OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) products .

  • Ambuja Cool Walls replaces clay brick walls with pre-cast concrete inbuilt with a special heat barrier technology that keeps houses 5 degree Celsius cooler during summers and warmer in winters.

  • In December 2024, Ambuja partnered with Finland-based Coolbrook to implement RotoDynamic Heater (RDH) technology, which uses renewable electricity for zero-carbon high-temperature process heating, significantly reducing fossil fuel dependence in cement manufacturing.

CONCLUSION

"We are already amongst the lowest emission intensity cement producers globally and are undertaking a number of strategic initiatives to further reduce our GHG emission footprint. Being a member of the Alliance for Industry Decarbonization would allow us to leverage the experiences of global cross-sector industry peers, and in turn, share our approach to decarbonization," said Mr Karan Adani, Non-Executive Director, Ambuja Cements.
